Barnes & Noble Workers in NYC Seek Union Election
Employees at the West 82nd Street Barnes & Noble store in New York City are making moves to unionize! 📚
What's Happening? This week, workers at the UWS Manhattan store filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). They're aiming to join the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), following in the footsteps of other Barnes & Noble locations.
Union Momentum The decision to unionize comes after five other Barnes & Noble Inc. stores across the nation, along with one Barnes & Noble Education store, voted in favor of union representation. If successful, the UWS store will join two other unionized Barnes & Noble locations in NYC: the Union Square flagship and the Park Slope, Brooklyn store.
Why Unionize? Workers are seeking union representation to address various concerns, including job security, inconsistent job duties, and favoritism from management. They hope that forming a union will give them a stronger voice and lead to improvements in their working conditions.
Employee Voices Lauren Champlin, a Bookseller at the Upper West Side Barnes & Noble, emphasized the importance of workers' rights and fair treatment. She believes that unionizing will help employees receive the pay, protection, and respect they deserve for their hard work.
What's Next? If successful, the RWDSU will represent around 50 eligible workers at the 82nd Street store, including Booksellers, Baristas, Cashiers, Maintenance staff, and non-supervisory employees.
Let's keep an eye on this unionization effort and see how it unfolds! ✊
