AT&T customers faced major outages across the U.S. 📵 Over 50,000 reports flooded in around 7 a.m. ET Thursday, with Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta hit hardest, as per Downdetector.
Verizon and T-Mobile users also experienced some disruptions, although not as widespread as AT&T. At 4 a.m. ET, there were over 32,000 AT&T outages, peaking at more than 50,000 by 7 a.m., with the most problems in the mentioned cities.
The outage ballooned to over 71,000 just before 8 a.m. ET. T-Mobile had 1,100 outages, and Verizon reported around 3,000 at 7 a.m. Thursday.
The cause of the disruption remains unclear.
AT&T addressed the issue Thursday morning, stating: “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning.”
“We are working urgently to restore service to them. We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored,” the company added.
Verizon clarified that the outages didn't affect their network directly but impacted customers trying to connect with another carrier facing the issue.
T-Mobile assured early Thursday that their network was not down and was operating normally. Downdetector's numbers likely reflected attempts by customers to reach users on other networks.
The outages raised concerns as some may be unable to reach 911 in emergencies.
San Francisco’s Fire Department acknowledged the issue, advising AT&T users struggling with 911 calls to try a landline or reach out to someone on a different carrier.
Similar warnings were issued by Chicago's Office of Emergency Management & Communications, Virginia’s Prince William County police department, and North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens pledged support in resolving the issue and assured that Atlanta’s e-911 was functional.
“Atlanta’s e-911 is able to receive inbound and make outbound calls. We have received calls from AT&T customers that their cellular phones are in SOS mode,” Dickens said.
